Kingman Letter: Tax supports conservation

The Arizona landscape is uniquely beautiful, with its red rock canyons and wind scored buttes. This beautiful landscape supports a wide variety of wildlife, and Arizona hunters are integral in supporting its conservation.

Hunters in Arizona, along with many other outdoor enthusiasts, believe conserving and protecting the wildlife in Arizona is vitally important. Hunting Works for Arizona is a partnership of hunting and shooting organizations, businesses and other groups that recognize the benefits hunters provide to our state’s economy and wildlife. One of the ways hunters contribute to conservation is the Pittman-Robertson Act, which turned 75 in 2012.

Through the Pittman-Robertson Act, firearms and ammunition are taxed, and that money, along with the revenue from hunting licenses, is used by the Arizona Game and Fish Department to support wildlife preservation and conservation education in Arizona.

The Arizona Game and Fish Department has been able to conduct research on wildlife and the environment, purchase and maintain lands for preservation, and conduct safety education programs for hunters and others, all because of funds from the Pittman-Robertson Act.

Let’s continue to support the conservation of our beautiful landscape by supporting another 75 years of Pittman-Robertson. Hunters provide much of the revenue for this program, but all of us enjoy its benefits.
